KF0SCN

I'm Brandon Johnson, licensee of amateur radio station KF0SCN. I'm a software engineer and amateur radio operator from Minneapolis, MN, EN34.

I was introduced to amateur radio by Tony Collen (N0RUA), a friend and fellow independent software engineer. Tony passed away unexpectedly in August 2024, and I was inspired to get licensed in his memory.

about the operator

I've been working in software for about a decade, mostly as an independent consultant. In addition to knowing Tony and hearing about some of his experiences as an amateur radio operator, I was really lucky early on to work on a MotoTRBO integration (a pretty rare thing for a software developer to encounter) enabling radio operators to track their equipment's GPS coordinates.

None of us working directly on the project really knew how to operate radio equipment, much less program the repeaters and handhelds. While that project has long since concluded, another thing that gets me excited about amateur radio is about learning more about the equipment and the technology that makes modern communications possible.

current equipment

Baofeng BF-F8HP-PRO: Handheld transceiver. At first I thought it wasn't quite working, but then I figured out how to key up the local repeater and make contacts. Catch you on the Richfield Radio Club 70cm repeater!

lofi logbook

I've created an account on QRZ.com, but I'm still pretty new to the hobby -- thanks for bearing with me! Log a contact if you're so inclined.

2024-11-4 @ approx 14:00: Shout out to N0SDH (Steven), who I spoke to on the Richfield Radio Club 70cm repeater! First contact made. Apologies for the awkwardness -- still learning the ropes. Looking forward to seeing you on the air and on QRZ!
